Artist Leslie Rowland brings 'Versus' to the Clark County Government Center Rotunda Gallery through July 23, 2010. Rowland explores confrontation -- war versus peace, right versus left, religion versus science, male versus female, civilization versus nature -- in a new exhibit appropriately titled "Versus" at the Clark County Government Center Rotunda Gallery, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway, in downtown Las Vegas and near the Arts District. "The goal of 'Versus' was to find some resolution, truth and humor in topics that usually bring confrontation," Rowland said. "Overcoming my own prejudices was the most difficult part of representing both sides of these issues. It came to my attention that we tend to believe what we want to believe, disregarding information that supports opposing viewpoints. Overcoming this tendency, and in doing so, opening ourselves to new ideas, is the first step in coming closer to truth." Rowland has been a Las Vegas resident for 13 years and is a graduate of Evergreen State University of Washington where she earned a bachelor's degree in environmental studies. As a college student, she began painting out of pure joy and furnished her first homes with furniture she creatively reimagined into works of art. Her repertoire has evolved to include abstract canvases and work impacted by years spent traveling in third-world countries and American natural environments. The Clark County Government Center Rotunda Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and until 10 p.m. during First Friday events.
