Demi. Our town didn't really have much. We had a Mcdonalds, Walmart, a couple of town restaurants, a gas station, a small outdoor mall with the Cinema beside it, a bowling alley, a community college, Elementary school combined with a Middle school, a High school, and a church. So it didn't take me long to show Joe around. We had stopped to get some Mcdonald's for dinner and then drove to a vacant parking lot on the edge of town. We laid in the back of the truck, munching on hamburgers and fries while admiring the stars. "Let's play twenty questions," I suggested. "Okay," he agreed. "Where are you from?" I asked. "New York City. There were so many buildings, it blocked my view of the stars. I haven't seen stars this clearly in forever," he told me. "Wow. Is it hard to move from a place with such life to a place that barely exsist on a map?" I asked. He shrugged, "Nah. I like this place. Though I had lived in New York City for several years, I've always enjoyed peace and quiet." He looked away from the stars and at me, "Are you from here?" I nodded. "Have you ever been out of state?" He asked "Nope," I replied. He looked at me, squinting his eyes. "Don't you feel trapped? Don't you just wanna open the cage and get out of here?" "Not now. My mom needs me..." "If I may ask, why?" I paused. Here I was, telling a stranger what I've never even told my old best friend. And - and I felt like I could trust him. But he was new and knew barely anybody. I decided to tell him the short, simple, and somewhat truthy version of my story. "After my dad..." I swollowed the lump in my throat. "Died. My mom had - uh - still is having a hard time getting over it." "I'm so sorry." I faked a smile in his direction, "It's okay." He shook his head and looked back at the stars. "It's not. I shoulndn't have asked." "It's seriously okay," I told him. "If it makes you feel better, I barely see my dad. He's a rockstar, well, he is trying to get there. He tours all year and only comes home every other Christmas," Joe admitted. I sighed, I shoudl've said something right then, but I couldn't. I couldn't find the right words to comfort him so we sat there in silence. My phone suddenly started to vibrate. I shot up quickly and pulled the phone out of my pocket. "Hello?" "Babeeeee," Sterling slurred. "Hey" I said. "Come over," he said. "I can't, I'm busy," I told him. "You're coming over and if you don't," there was a pause and then a loud thump. "If you don't come over," he repeated. "Then I move onto the next girl." I sighed, "Okay. I'll be there in twenty." "Good girl," he hung up. I turned to Joe, "I'm sorry, I have to go. My mom wants me home," I lied.
