11/05/2011 My description was too long... Please see it in its entirety at http://www.ak49bwl.com/videos/video.php?video=1320519600 I'm stealing these excerpts from a thread on the cat forum I moderate at http://www.i-love-cats.com/forums/cat-chat/ ... So much good info. NEVER DECLAW A CAT!!! --------------- Part of the problem is greedy vets who don't give full disclosure. They tell the client it is "simply permanant removal of the claws" . they make it sound easy and pretty. Declawing is 10, TEN, amputations of the cat's toes, bones ligaments and tendons, and the cats actually walk on these toes, so they are left with pain and crippling gait for the remainder of their lives. Four paw declawing is an even worse horror. Imagine not even being able to scratch at itch. In another forum just yesterday a new person came in and wanted to know why their cat, who they'd had declawed 6 months ago, was acting like her feet hurt. Either the person is an incredible moron, or the vet lied about the procedure. And of course there's always at least one thread where someone had their cat declawed and now they want to dump the cat. People who do this thing, knowing what it entails, apparently place so little value on the pet that dumping the cat is just the next step after having the cat's toes amputated. --------------- What do people do when their cat scratches their furniture in Europe, where it is ILLEGAL to have a cat declawed? Personally see it as just furniture, who cares. Yes I like a clean and tidy home and actually suffer from OCD, but animals health and happiness is more important than my furniture any day. If people don't want animals that scratch their furniture, don't get them in the first place, as thats what animals do! --------------- My post on the matter: I would much rather see a pet given up to a shelter than be declawed. A shelter does not necessarily mean the cat will be euthanized.. I'm a shelter volunteer of 2.5+ years, I know. Declawing, however, is forever, and much more impacting than [Banfield the Pet Hospital's] pamphlet is letting on. Personally I believe the rest of this country should follow suit of the other 25 countries listed here http://www.declawing.com/htmls/declawing.htm (England, Scotland, Wales, Italy, France, Germany, Bosnia, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Slovenia, Portugal, Belgium, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Yugoslavia, Malta, and Israel), and ban the practice entirely. Sure it would inconvenience so many pet owners out there (who in my opinion don't make good pet owners if they're willing to MUTILATE the cat for their own CONVENIENCE), but it would most certainly be better for the cats of the world if they did. You know, I do have to wonder tho.. If [Banfield] DID fully disclose what declawing does... How many people would actually still do it??? People with no remorse.. I happen to have a good friend who was misled (as [Banfield's] pamphlet is also), and she has 6 declawed cats... As soon as I showed and told her what this process REALLY entails (which her vet DIDN'T)?? Well, let's just say she will never do it again, and she has 2 more cats since then, fully clawed, and trained to use them in the proper places. Training CAN be done, with ANY cat, if people are so willing to take the time to do it. So, while I am glad [Banfield] came to the forum to discuss this, I also have to greatly disagree with declawing on the whole, and I still believe it is not a good practice to promote declawing. It should be considered ONLY as a last alternative, where the cat will DIE unless it is done. "Declawed cats are dumped in shelters and on the streets all the time. Ask anyone who works in rescue." As I've said before, I am a shelter volunteer and I agree with this sentence. And you know, an often seen reason for being given up in cases of declawed cats? Litterbox avoidance... And I can't even begin to count how many of these cats DIE because no one wants a cat with litterbox issues, which is caused by having the cat declawed!!!! Maybe it doesn't happen in ALL cases... But it certainly is not a small number of cases either. Another thing I just thought about that I've seen.. Cats without their claws will use their only remaining defense... And suddenly you have a chronic biter on your hands.. Yeah, that's really going to keep kitty alive isn't it... Want to get to know me more outside of Youtube? Nov 12, 2011 - They're not that versatile really... Generally they're glued to the cats' nails and fall off after about a month or so when the cats shed their nails.

Dec 1, 2011 - i came by accident on this vid of yours, and by its start and some content i was... not impressed :) But I really appreciate whatever you are doing with cats, and i couldn't agree more with you about declawing subject, so respect from me.

Jan 31, 2012 - Only problem with softpaws is that I've known qite a few cats h get them off by continuously chewing on them. My mom's cats Ruff and Ready were really bad about that. But as much as my Max drives me crazy clawing the couch I'd still rather put up with that and trim his nails as often as possible than cut his fingers off. I only wish my folks hadn't gotten th two kittens declawed, but evn though they usually don't believe in it the furniture won out over the cat in this case.

Mar 22, 2012 - Loving forever home, than being abandoned because of the damage they have caused. Did you know that's the number one reason people get rid of their cats? If you want your cat to be an outdoor cat, then buy cheap furniture, and do NOT declaw. That's their only survival out there. -3
AK49BWL Says:
Mar 22, 2012 - It is inhumane, like it or not. Having a cats' natural equipment removed for the sake of the owner's convenience (whatever reason you did it, was NOT for them) is inhumane. Just wait until they're older.. You'll see the effects.. Early arthritis, back problems... But blah blah blah.
AK49BWL Says:
Mar 22, 2012 - Or put the cats' lifestyles above your furniture... But unfortunately that's beyond most people's capabilities.
AK49BWL Says:
Mar 22, 2012 - And I know all too well the number one reason for people "getting rid of" their cats. And it's not because of their NATURAL GOD-GIVEN CLAWS. Being a shelter volunteer, I know more than you could ever guess.

Mar 22, 2012 - So many, huh... Funny, I've never heard any such thing. Where are you finding this stuff? LOL...
AK49BWL Says:
Mar 22, 2012 - Excuse is certainly right! Second is new babies, moving, least often being "tearing apart my home"... That's called, it's natural, train them to use a scratch post/tree or get over it. Better yet, I'd much rather see them in the shelter here than declawed.

Mar 23, 2012 - what a load of crap
104hiker Says:
Mar 23, 2012 - declawed cats get dumped just as often as cats who have not been mutilated. Its a stupid tired old argument.
104hiker Says:
Mar 23, 2012 - Yeah I bet they were "just fine". Cats walk on their toes. You had their toes cut off, so they lived the rest of their lives in pain. Back pain because they could never ever EVER stretch properly without their toes, back and leg pain because they couldn't ever walk they way they were designed to walk, and most likely pain on the stumps that used to be their toes. In case you weren't aware, cats hid pain unless/until it is so debilitating they can barely walk. So you'd never know.
. . . . . . . because these video appear directly from youtube.com which we cannot control it.)
